Spaceman draws inspiration from Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel. It tells the story of a Czech cosmonaut who is assigned on a mission that no one else is prepared to take on, his failing marriage to his wife who is stuck on Earth, and his friendship with Hanuš, a gigantic spider. The book received accolades for its lightheartedness, moving metaphors, and nonsensical take on science fiction. None of that comes across in the film adaption, which is helmed by Johan Renck of Chernobyl from a screenplay by Colby Day.
